The haftarah on the Shabbos of Erev Rosh Chodesh Elul

[א] (halacha 889)

The Haftarah of a Shabbos that is Also Erev Rosh Chodesh Elul

Question: What Haftarah is read on a Shabbos that is Erev Rosh Chodesh Elul?

The two sides of the question are that, on the one hand, there is the fixed Haftarah of "Machar Chodesh," which is read when Rosh Chodesh falls on Sunday, while on the other hand, there are seven fixed Haftaros for these seven weeks between Tishah B'Av and Rosh Hashanah — the "Shiva D'Nechemta" — and the Haftarah of Re'eh is "Aniyah So'arah"¹.

Answer: The Gemara in Maseches Megillah² states: "Rosh Chodesh .. that falls on Sunday, on the previous day we read as the Haftarah 'Vayomer lo Yehonatan Machar Chodesh.'"

Based on this, some have written that on this Shabbos one recites the Haftarah of "Machar Chodesh," since it is mentioned in the Talmud, as the Mordechai writes³: ".. one does not skip the seven [Haftaros] of consolation, but in Speyer⁴ they had the custom to skip the seven [Haftaros] of consolation on account of 'HaShamayim Kis'i' and on account of 'Vayomer lo Yehonatan,' which are written in the Talmud."

So too it is written in the Minhagei Maharash of Neustadt⁵: "Rosh Chodesh Elul fell on Sunday, and they read as the Haftarah 'Vayomer lo Yehonatan Machar Chodesh' in the city of Neustadt."

See also Yosef Ometz⁶: "When Rosh Chodesh Elul .. falls on Sunday, we read as the Haftarah 'Vayomer Yehonatan.' And on Shabbos Ki Seitzei, when we read as the Haftarah 'Rani Akarah,' we join with it 'Aniyah So'arah,' which was fit to be read on Rosh Chodesh or Erev Rosh Chodesh, since it is all one parashah."⁷

On the other hand, some have written that although "Machar Chodesh" is mentioned in the Talmud, nonetheless the custom is not to change from the Haftaros of the Shiva D'Nechemta, as Tosafos writes⁸: that we follow the practice according to the Pesikta to recite the three [Haftaros] of retribution before Tishah B'Av, and these are: "Divrei Yirmiyahu," "Shim'u Devar Hashem," "Chazon Yeshayahu," and after Tishah B'Av the seven of consolation .. and these are: "Nachamu Nachamu," "Vatomer Tziyon," "Aniyah So'arah" by itself, "Anochi Anochi," "Rani Akarah," "Kumi Ori," "Sos Asis" .. and therefore we place "Aniyah So'arah" before "Rani Akarah," for it is the way of the consolations to progress and become increasingly praiseworthy .. and your mnemonic is "Dash Nu'a Ark Shad" .. and this custom shall never change, according to the Pesikta, and so explained Rabbeinu Tam .."⁹ The words of Tosafos are also cited in the gloss on the aforementioned Mordechai.

So too the Abudraham writes¹⁰: "But the Haftaros of 'Dash Nu'a Ark Shad' are never exchanged for others." And the Beis Yosef writes¹¹ concerning his words: "And he was very expert in these matters, and therefore it is proper to rely on his words, and so is the custom to read the seven of consolation as the Haftarah even when Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbos, and after they finish the Haftarah they recite the first pasuk of the Haftarah 'HaShamayim Kis'i' and the pasuk 'Vehayah midei chodesh' as a reminder that today is Rosh Chodesh."

And the Maharil¹² wrote: "In this year, when Elul fell on Sunday, all the great authorities ruled to read as the Haftarah 'Machar Chodesh,' since it is in the Talmud, and we are not concerned about the mnemonic of the seven of consolation of the Pesikta, and also because the 'ayin' returns with the 'reish' after two Shabbosos, as above¹³. And so wrote all the great authors, but Maharao ruled and instituted in Vienna to read as the Haftarah 'Aniyah So'arah,' and I asked him his reasoning, and he answered me that there was a certain elder in Vienna who testified that such was the custom, and he showed him this in an old collection, and on this basis he instituted so. And peace."

So too it is written in the Minhagei Maharil¹⁴: "When Rosh Chodesh Elul falls on Sunday, one does not read as the Haftarah 'Machar Chodesh,' and look in the Or Zarua, chapter 'Bnei Ha'ir,' and you will understand the reasoning of all of them: the reason is specifically [when it is] Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh, then we skip 'Aniyah So'arah' and read as the Haftarah 'HaShamayim Kis'i,' since it is among the consolations of Yeshayahu, but 'Machar Chodesh' is in the book of Shmuel, in which there is no consolation, [so] we should not change the order¹⁵, and so it is written in the Mordechai HaGadol, that he saw this as a practical ruling; thus I saw in Tosafos."

And in the Sefer HaMinhagim (Tyrnau)¹⁶: "If Rosh Chodesh falls on Sunday, one does not read as the Haftarah 'Machar Chodesh.' So it is in the version of Maharak, since it contains no consolation." And so it is written there in the minhag for the whole year at its end.

And the Mechaber wrote¹⁷: "When Rosh Chodesh falls on Sunday, we read as the Haftarah on the preceding Shabbos 'Vayomer lo Yehonatan Machar Chodesh.'"¹⁸

And the Rema wrote in a gloss: "And 'Aniyah So'arah' or 'Shim'u' is not overridden on account of 'Machar Chodesh.'"

The Levush¹⁹ too wrote in accordance with the words of the Rema: "If Rosh Chodesh Elul is on Sunday, one does not read as the Haftarah 'Machar Chodesh' on Shabbos, since it contains no consolation."

So too the Chida wrote²⁰: "When Rosh Chodesh Elul falls on Shabbos or on Sunday, one reads as the Haftarah 'Aniyah So'arah.'"

Chabad custom: It is written in the Sefer HaMinhagim²¹: "Re'eh — 'Aniyah So'arah' etc. .. If it is Shabbos Erev Rosh Chodesh, one reads as the Haftarah 'Aniyah So'arah' and adds the first and last pasuk of the Haftarah 'Machar Chodesh.'"²²
